Employees of sleep treatment centers are now subject to a criminal background checks in California under a new law by a Merced state senator. Sen. Jeff Denham introduced the law that requires sleep technicians to undergo background checks, pass a competency exam and meet educational requirements.
Denham’s law is in response to an incident involving a Lacanalale Amorsolo. Amorsolo was accused of molesting four men who were undergoing a sleep study at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years of probation.
While the new law is supported by medical officials, a spokeswoman at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital said all employees under go criminal background checks. Amorsolo passed his background check, she said. The hospital now has video monitors in the sleep centers.
