Officials in the Edenton, North Carolina are considering requiring criminal background checks and fingerprints. The new policy under consideration by the town council would also allows personnel officials to deny employment if the checks find proof of criminal history.
Police Chief Jay Fortenberry said the town council’s approval is necessary in order for his officers to run applicants through state and national databases. The information will not be shared with the public and the records will show if the charges were dismissed. While the police department will do the background checks for now, in the future the checks could be outsourced to a private company.
