One is not born a criminal, but becomes one. Social and economic circumstances drive one to engage themselves in criminal activities. People who are found guilty of minor offences such as cases of misbehavior and other petty criminal charges are often held on probation. First time offenders are usually given a probation sentence as a means of correcting their criminal tendencies. The offender is not sentenced to a prison term and instead allowed to stay in the community and perform community service. However, during this period the offender needs to stay under the observation of the probation officer. The sentence is directed to bring about a change in the offender’s attitude so that he does not indulge in criminal activities in the future and to bring him back to community life.
Maine Probation is under the supervision of the Maine Department of Corrections. According to Maine Probation laws, the offender needs to serve under a probation officer for a stipulated period of time. The time specified for the probation sentence cannot exceed the time of the prison sentence. For example if a criminal has been sentenced for a five year term, then the probation cannot exceed that time limit. Maine Probation sentence is applicable for an adjudicated criminal and is imposed in place of a prison term. However, the offender is kept under the charge of a probation officer.
Main Probation Violation
Probation violation can result in serious consequences and these may also include a prison term sentence. The court will reconsider the case in the event of probation violation and then declare its sentence. During the period of probation, the probationer is required to make payments for the supervision to the State of Maine, court fees and fines.
The offender under Maine Probation sentence is supposed to pay a visit to the supervising officer in the local probation office at regular intervals. This helps the probation officer to keep a tab on his activities and whereabouts. An individual under probation is not allowed to travel without the permission of the concerned authorities. If the probation officer observes that the activities of the probationer can land him in a precarious position, then he can immediately contact his employers, community members and family to keep them informed about the situation.
