The Department of Public Safety of Iowa maintains the Iowa Sex Offender Registry, established in 1995. The registry enlists the name and present address of sex offenders convicted or adjudicated of a criminal offense against a minor, sexual exploitation and sexually violent crime. Moreover, the sex offenders on probation, parole, work release status or incarcerated on or after July, 1, 1995, are also included on the registry. The registry does not include the persons, who have received a deferred sentence or judgment and can include convictions from other jurisdictions such as other states and/or federal convictions. The sex offender registry is based on the information provided by state and local government agencies and the registrants themselves. The registry information is updated frequently.
As of July 1, 2007, over 1,500 registrants have been eliminated from the registry as they had completed their 10 year of registry requirement. As of July 1, 2007, 6,260 sex offenders have remained on the Iowa sex offender registry. As of October 1, 2009, the number of registrants’ decreases to 5,041. Out of which, there are 4,946 registrants published on the web. There are 507 out of state and 758 incarcerated registrants on the registry.

On or after July 1, 1995, any person who has been convicted or adjudicated of a criminal offense against a minor, sexual exploitation or a sexually violent crime and who was on probation, parole or work release status is required to register. An individual who was incarcerated on or after July 1, 1995, is also required to be registered. The registration period changes to lifetime upon successive sex-related convictions or if the registrant is convicted of an aggravated offense.
The registered sex offender must report any change of address or telephone number within five days of the change for the entire registration period. Moving within the same county, the registrant must inform the county sheriff.
