In the state of Vermont, the Vermont Criminal Information Center (VCIC) is the main repository of all criminal record information, generated by criminal justice agencies statewide. VCIC is a division of the Vermont Department of Public Safety and is responsible for processing requests for Vermont criminal background check.
The central repository of the state contains information documenting the resident’s contact with the criminal justice system, including data regarding identification, arrest, arraignment, judicial disposition, custody and supervision. It also verifies arrest, prosecution, sentencing and correctional information furnished by the state agencies into a criminal history format, which documents the contacts of the subject of criminal record with the criminal justice system in Vermont. The repository does not include motor vehicle offenses, vehicular homicide (prior to 9/1/ 1995), other state charges, records of juveniles, expunged charges.
Access to Vermont Criminal Background Records
Only qualified entities (an individual, business, governmental agency, organization) may receive record checks from the state. Anyone can request the criminal background check, either for his on records or anyone else. One can make a request for the check on the behalf of A Vermont employer providing care or care placement services to a vulnerable population.
Obtaining Vermont Criminal Background Records Offline
The Vermont Criminal Information Center is authorized of providing a copy of personal criminal record or conviction reports to well identified persons for any reason. Criminal background record checks may be obtained by personal appearance at VCIC (8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M). Requestors must bring the government issued photo ID as there is no exception to the photo ID requirement. Fee of $30 in the form of money order, bank check or cash is acceptable for each copy of a record check.
If someone thinks to be a qualified entity, he should apply in writing to the VCIC to be officially designated as a qualified entity. Application should be on letterhead stationery and should explain how an individual, business, agency meets the definition of a qualified entity. An authorized agency code will be provided by VCIC, to anyone if designated as a qualified entity. Once the authorized agency code has been assigned, the qualified entity will be authorized to request and receive criminal conviction searches.

Five to seven working days are required, in order to process a criminal conviction search and criminal background check via mail. Information on Criminal conviction cannot be reported over the phone and can not be faxed.
